Samuel V. Stewart Papers 1889-1943

Samuel Stewart (1872-1939) was governor of Montana from 1913 to 1921 and associate justice of the Montana Supreme Court from 1933 to 1939. Samuel V. Stewart was born on August 2, 1872, in Monroe County, Ohio, the son of John W. and Maria (Carle) Stewart. The family moved to Kansas about 1883. After attending the Kansas Normal College, Stewart taught school for a few years, and then graduated from the University of Kansas law school in 1898. He was admitted to the Montana bar shortly after his graduation. He practiced law in Virginia City. Stewart was elected Montana governor in 1912 and re-elected in 1916. ...
